JCUA delegation attends Jewish-German reconciliation event: A number of staff and board members represented JCUA in Berlin at the April 27-May 4 celebration of the 50th anniversary of Action Reconciliation Service for Peace. ARSP, founded in the aftermath of World War II and the Holocaust, is committed to combating racism and anti-Semitism, as well as establishing positive contact with countries that suffered under Nazi Germany. Human Rights in Chicago: JCUA testifies at Geneva human-rights meeting

JCUA was represented in Geneva, Switzerland in late February at sessions of the United Nations committee that oversees the International Convention to Eliminate All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD). Representing JCUA and its offshoot, the Developing Government Accountability to the People network, were Brian Gladstein, director of community programs, who presented a human-rights report decrying Chicago’s officially sanctioned violations, and Nancy Bothne, JCUA’s human-rights consultant and former midwest director for Amnesty International. Developing Government Accountability to the People

In an impressive, first-ever event for Chicago’s communities and the non-profits that advocate on their behalf, some 160 community leaders of more than 100 organizations recently came together to discuss the new City Council dynamics and the opportunities they present for political reform.

The conference was hosted by the DGAP (Developing Government Accountability to the People) network, which focuses on the connection between social-justice issues and government accountability and corruption. (DGAP in early 2007 issued a landmark report card that graded the city in key areas -- criminal justice, economic development, education, environment, ethics, housing and transportation -- and also shone a spotlight on aldermanic voting records and campaign contributions.) Read more ...
